• One involves the use of an esophageal voice, where a patient is taught to swallow air and bring it back up and speak.
• An electronic larynx—a buzzer-like battery-operated unit—may be pressed against the neck while the mouth
and tongue form the words.
• A third method uses a unit that looks like a pipe. The sound is put into the mouth and the words are fashioned
with the tongue and lips.
• There is also a method that requires a surgical procedure (tracheoesophageal puncture) to create a connection
between the airway and the esophagus to insert a voice prosthesis ("button") and breathing valve.
